LMUDescription – Yukon Planning Atlas

Use Case #1: Yukon Landscape Management Unit Description

NB: _This Use Case is part of the Basic interface._

Problem Statement Land use planning information is currently available as a series of high quality cartographic products, however the number and size of downloads required to obtain this information is a barrier to distribution.

Context

Yukon planning regions are divided into landscape management units that describe the values (e.g. heritage, wildlife, oil & gas, minerals), current level of development (“footprints”) and spatially explicit recommendations (e.g. “Total footprint in the Buggy Wetlands shall not exceed 1% of total LMU area”). LMU’s are used to ascertain conformity to the plan during regulatory review of development applications by projects assessors, approval agencies and the general public.

Functional Description

  • Users are able to navigate to a single page displaying the details for the selected LMU.
  • Navigation is simple & text based, using menus or picklists to progressively refine the selection to the desired Planning Region and LMU.
  • An image map of the Planning Region could be used to allow selection of the LMU.
  • Minimal interaction with the map is possible, as it is a static image drawn from the filesystem.
  • The user may chose from several different thematic views for each LMU (e.g. oil&gas, key wildlife areas).
  • The user may request the information be downloaded as a printed report. The report is formatted as an Adobe Postscript file, and sent to the user via email.

Data Description

An image for each LMU/Theme combination is prepared in advance from existing graphic files (jpg), and saved in a local filesystem. There might be 50 to 60 images for the entire North Yukon Planning region (12 LMU’s X 5 themes). In addition to the Map, other static descriptive information would be displayed.

  • Name, location and extent of Planning Region, possibly a small reference map of the region as it relates to the Yukon;
  • Map of Landscape Management Unit, in relation to the Planning Region & Yukon;
  • Planning Information Summary, including LMU area and perimeter, current surface disturbance and linear density, landscape type composition (area and %, with photos), Plan excerpt (values & recommendations specific to LMU);
